Keynote Summary
You may have just started as a CFO. You may be in a Finance position, considering a CFO role or you may be a CFO in a small organization looking to move up to a larger company. This month’s panel will discuss the key competencies of the CFO role in different size operations, the virtual CFO concept and what is important for the CFO role from the perspective of recruitment specialists.
Panellist Bios
Ed Chaplin
Ed Chaplin joined Solacom in 2011 as Vice President Finance & Administration, responsible for all financial aspects of the company. With 16 years of experience in public and private companies, he has a broad range of fiscal management and leadership experience including daily financial operations, debt and equity transactions, as well as leading global teams through corporate acquisitions and streamlining information systems for improved finance efficiencies, controls and reporting.
Before joining Solacom, Mr. Chaplin worked in several technology companies including ARISE Technologies as Interim Corporate Controller, BTI Systems Inc. as VP Finance, Corel Corporation as Corporate Controller and Accounting Manager, and as a Senior U.S. Tax Specialist with Ernst & Young.
Mr. Chaplin completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at Carleton University in Ottawa, and is a Chartered Accountant and member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Peter Dans
Peter Dans is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Nordion Inc., a $270 million global health sciences company. Nordion is a world leader in providing Targeted Therapies, Sterilization Technologies, and Medical Isotopes.
Peter joined Nordion (formerly MDS Inc.) in August 2007 as VP, Financial Planning & Analysis. He was appointed CFO of Nordion in February 2010.
Before joining Nordion, Peter held global finance leadership roles at Nortel in North America, Singapore and the Philippines where he acquired significant external reporting and financial operating experience. Peter also held the CFO position at LG-Nortel in South Korea.
Peter earned a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Queens University, an MBA from York University – Schulich School of Business, and holds a CMA and Professional Engineering designations.
Anne Stevenson
Anne Stevenson, President, Stevenson and White, has more than 20 years of experience building recruiting strategies and assisting companies acquire top–tier talent. An accomplished recruiter and business woman, her vision and expertise has attributed to hundreds of finance and accounting placements over the years.
Anne is known for her abilities to quickly identify clients’ needs that go far beyond the technical job description and focus on the “fit” within the organization. She believes that to make a successful hire, both the candidate and the hiring company must benefit from the match.
In 2000, Anne and Trevor White opened the doors to Stevenson and White, providing her with the venue to put her knowledge and experience to work. Since 2000 the company has experienced exponential growth and is now a recognized leader in the financial recruiting market in Ottawa.
Bonnie Wright
Bonnie Wright is a Virtual CFO, working with a small number of technology companies to help them in addressing their financial requirements. She provides the full range of CFO services from financial and reporting system design and maintenance to fund raising, and all the administrative functions in between.
Bonnie has over 25 years experience in senior financial positions in technology companies in the Ottawa area, including time spent with large company spin-offs, like TMI Communications, public company situations, such as BIO LOGICALS, and green-field start-ups, such as Atsana Semiconductor. To add value to her client base, Bonnie also brings several years experience as a venture capitalist with Working Ventures Canadian Fund.
Bonnie is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Secretary. She spent the first seven years of her accounting career at Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young).
Moderator Bio
Ross Morgan is the Managing Director of CFO4RESULTS, a company of part-time contract CFO’s providing complete executive level financial services to Ottawa based technology companies.
Ross has more than 20 years accounting experience split between public accounting with Ernst & Young in Toronto and Ottawa, and Ottawa technology companies. He currently provides CFO services to Rockstar Consortium, Triacta Power, Mobile Knowledge and Renaissance Repair and Supply.
Ross spent 11 years in public accounting before moving into the technology sector. He worked full time in senior finance roles with Plaintree Systems, Loran Technologies, Peregrine Systems and Mobile Knowledge. For the past 9 years, Ross has worked as a part time CFO and his former clients include Intelligent Photonics, Objectworld Communications and Advanced Bioelectric.
Ross is a Chartered Accountant with a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Accounting from the University of Waterloo. He has served as Secretary, Treasurer or Director of several of his clients.
