Program Background

The Ottawa High School Technology Program was created to address the declining enrollment in post-secondary technology courses. If Ottawa is to maintain its position as a technology leader, it is critical that we ensure that we have a sustainable talent pipeline. After executing a number of initiatives with a local high school it became clear that the programs with the greatest impact on the students were the ones that allowed them to explore leading edge technology under the mentorship of industry experts. In 2011, OCRI, in partnership with the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE), received funding to expand the program.

Current Situation

The pilot project has been successful in establishing a viable model but there is considerable pressure to expand. With the support of all stakeholders including private sector partners, the school boards and funders, the program will be expanding to all schools in the region. In order to create broad community awareness, support, and enrollment, the Ottawa High School Technology Program will be initiating an image campaign targeting parents, teachers and guidance councilors. The campaign will span three years, ending March 2014. At the campaign’s conclusion, all materials developed in Ottawa will be packaged for future use across Ontario.

Requirement

At this time, we are inviting proposals to develop basic branded promotion tools to support the program. All documents will need to be produced in French and English, please list translation costs separately. Tools required include:

a three-panel, four-colour portable banner stand for PR launches/in-school events
500 2’ x 3’ posters to be distributed to schools and stakeholder organizations (e.g. OCRI, mentor companies) over a two-and-a-half year period

500 branded 2 GB USB memory sticks for distribution of PDF collaterals, success stories, video success stories and executable student-built games that can be distributed over a two-and-a-half year period

500 branded print-on-demand business cards, for mentors/students/stakeholders, that can be handed out by program participants to friends and colleagues over a two-and-a-half year period

a four-page digital PDF brochure that can be emailed, or printed in-school, to send to students, parents, teachers and mentors that explains the program and details student success stories creating computer games/applications while in the program

Deadline for delivery of all material is end of Q1 2012.

Proposals should include: timelines for project deliverables; and budget. Samples or references of successful projects of a similar nature would assist in the evaluation of the proposal. The RFP will close at 5:00 p.m. Friday February 3, 2012.

Any questions concerning this RFP should be addressed to:

Program Background

The Ottawa High School Technology Program was created to address the declining enrollment in post-secondary technology courses. If Ottawa is to maintain its position as a technology leader, it is critical that we ensure that we have a sustainable talent pipeline. After executing a number of initiatives with a local high school it became clear that the programs with the greatest impact on the students were the ones that allowed them to explore leading edge technology under the mentorship of industry experts. In 2011, OCRI, in partnership with the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE), received funding to expand the program.

The campaign will span three years, ending March 2014. At the campaign’s conclusion, all materials developed in Ottawa will be packaged for future use across Ontario.

Requirement

At this time, we are inviting proposals to create a branded, dedicated YouTube Channel with a host who will go into high schools and record a series of success stories in HD video. Each video in the series, at five minute per episode, will be posted to YouTube as well as to a branded Facebook page for the program. The series will compromise 12 videos over a two-and-a-half year period however the scope of work for this RFP compromises the first four installments. The project also entails updating the existing web site using the newly established logo and brand guidelines as well as the creation of a program blog and social media channels. All material will need to be produced in English and French, please provide translation costs separately.

Deadline for delivery of this phase of the project is end of Q1 2012.

Proposals should include: timelines for project deliverables; and budget. Samples or references of successful projects of a similar nature would assist in the evaluation of the proposal. The RFP will close at 5:00 p.m. Friday February 3, 2012.

OCRI/Canadian Management Centre Workshop Series

Introduction to Situational Leadership™ – Adapting Your Style

Communicating Direction

Coaching

Delegating

Speakers

Jessica Chaikowsky
Canadian Management Centre

Keynote Summary

The intent of this series of workshops is to provide people managers, or those who manage projects or teams but may have indirect authority, with a toolkit of management practices that can easily be applied back in their workplaces.

The workshops are inspired by Hersey’s Situational Leadership™ model which encourages managers to adopt different leadership styles depending on the unique needs their employees. The model has four behaviour types or leadership styles. Each of the four styles is to be used according to the readiness of the employee to complete a specific task or function.

The introductory workshop will expose participants to the model and allow them the opportunity to self-assess their own preferences in terms of leadership styles.

The following three workshops will address one or more of the leadership styles and provide tools and strategies to support participants in effectively leading employees through deliverables.

Module 1 is strongly recommended as a prerequisite. Although it is not mandatory for the other workshops, the continuity and familiarity with the model will be helpful.

All modules will be 3.5 hours in length (including two 10-minute breaks). They will be interactive, with plenty of opportunity for discussion, application to personal situations and with a variety of learning activities.

Workshop #1 – Introduction to Situational Leadership™ – Adapting Your Style
Drive extraordinary results by adjusting your leadership style to complement the needs of your employees.

Discuss the performance impacts of over and under-supervision;

Explain the Situational Leadership Model:

four levels of follower readiness

four corresponding leadership approaches

Personal Assessment: Review personal results from the Situational Leadership™ assessment;

Application Activity: Analyze the readiness level of one or more of your employees and develop strategies to more effectively provide the right level of supervision;

Action Planning

Workshop #2 – Communicating Direction
Become a more powerful communicator by creating messages thoughtfully and increasing the chance that the results you seek will be the ones you get.

Discuss the benefits and challenges of one-way and two-way communication when providing direction

Review the communication process and the role of feedback in message transmission

Recognize and manage resistance

Plan your communication:

pinpoint your desired results using the Results Matrix™

Package your message:

select the appropriate communication mode

select the appropriate words to use and those to avoid when providing direction or aiming for buy-in

Action Planning

Workshop #3 – Coaching
Apply tools and processes to keep performance on track and employees motivated to reach optimal performance.

Discuss the benefits of coaching for you as the manager, for the employee, and for the organization

Describe the importance of trust in the coaching relationship

Apply observation and questioning techniques to help you get more out of your coaching interactions

Deliver positive feedback in a way that will help reinforce behaviour you want to see repeated

Apply a simple 5-step model to help you get employee performance back on track (based on The Practical Coach)

Action Planning

Workshop #4 – Delegating
Balance the need for the learning and growth of your employees with the need for shorter term results by becoming more strategic about your delegation plan.

Explore which tasks are appropriate for delegation

Use a structured delegation process to:

Select the appropriate candidate for a task

Pick the right level of authority to delegate

Establish the criteria for success

Handle resistance during the delegation process

Establish feedback loops and the follow-up process to avoid confusion

Develop a plan to delegate a task to one of your employees (please note that you should come prepared with a task in mind to benefit most from this experience)

Speaker Bio

Before starting at Canadian Management Centre in 2004 as Director of Learning Solutions, Jessica worked with Nortel and NAV CANADA, designing and developing training programs from data communications to the installation and repair of airport radars. She also developed and facilitated a variety of train-the-trainer, coaching and communication courses, acting as a coach and mentor to those learning to deliver training programs.

At CMC, Jessica customized over 75 innovative management and leadership programs. A few recent projects included: progressive blended management development curriculum for an accounting services firm; sales program for a national recruiting and HR services firm; change leadership program for a packaged goods company in Quebec; communications program for an oil and gas services company in Calgary; and a strategic planning program for a national team of pharmaceutical sales managers.

Learn about the underlying social aspects that form the lens by which each generation looks at the workplace. Gain an understanding about the challenges of a multigenerational workplace and learn effective management techniques to use with each generation to engage, motivate and ensure performance and growth.
